Seasonal Sundays #191 - Tips on Collecting Dishes

New Picture (6)
Collecting a set of white plates is a good threshold for anyone interested in expanding their dish collection, but where do you head after that?

New Picture (26)
Quite simply, you collect solid color dishes.
New Picture (15)
It’s very easy to add a patterned plate…
New Picture (38)
…or a patterned linen, such as a napkin…
New Picture (20)
…or tablecloth…
New Picture (2)
…but you need the base of a solid.
New Picture (9)
One of the best colors to start a collection with is red.
New Picture (28)
Here I’ve used red in a Christmas tablescape.
New Picture (29)
Here is the same red dinner plate used in another Christmas tablescape but with an entirely different feel.
New Picture (14)

Here the same red dinner plates are used in a patriotic table. This table could be used for Memorial Day or the Fourth of July. Red plates can also be used for a Valentine tablescape.

I always look for plates with an interesting edge such as the gold ones above.
Happy collecting!

Dishes are such my weakness.... your tips are very handy... too bad I have already filled every nook and crannie! I am passing this on to my daughter... she is just getting started!

I remember that yellow and white table, it's one of my favorites! I must admit I am a plate addict, but I buy in 2s and 4s and do a lot of mixing. I love how you use lots of different wonderful fabrics~

Oh my!I always love looking at beautiful collections of dishes, but it always makes me want to go buy more. Good thing the stores are closed or I'd be out the door. You and Yvonne from Stone Gable make me crazy when I see your dishes. They always inspire me. Just beautiful!

Excellent advice, Alma! You are a master at tablescapes and certainly have a collection of wonderful dishes. You offer inspiration week after week with wonderful new tablesettings. I don't know how you continue to do it, but appreciative that you do.
Two things I like to look for are salad/dessert plates and chargers that will fit in with my favorite dinner plates. Like you, I love interesting edges or shapes too.

Thank you so much...your tips are great. I have the basics for dinner plates and now I collect salad/dessert plates and jazz them up with pretty linens. But sometimes I feel frivolous so I haven't been looking for awhile. Mixing and matching what I have gives me a lot of options. My tablescapes exceed the number of times I have used them for company! Ha!!

Jane

Alma, you have such a talent for tablescapes, and the dishes to exhibit it! They're all beautiful, each with its own special features!

I only have two sets of every day dishes, which I mix and match for dinner parties, as many have chipped or gone missing, which actually makes for an eclectic display.

Thanks for hosting and have a wonderful Sunday.

Wonderful tips and wonderful tables! I would like to add the tips that have worked for me. If your budget and storage space is limited, only purchase what you really love. Also, I am very strict with myself and stick to one main rule: I don't buy anything unless I get rid of something else. This has really helped me with storage issues, plus I find that I rarely miss what I purged.

Thank you for hosting Alma! I am in love with the yellow and white tablescape. I have been looking for pretty yellows for a couple of years. You have a beautiful collection of white plates to work with. I am slowly adding to my meager selection of white plates but I keep getting side tracked with the pretty colorful plates.

You really have some beautiful dishes. I don't really have too many, but I do have a good selection of the new Fiesta. I have only purchased 1 set of each color so far, but can see the benefit of a few more of the red & maybe white. I have been pretty amazed with how many different ways I've been able to use all of the colors together. It's just so much fun. Thank you so much for hosting!

Great tips on collecting dishes. Every bride should read your post.

Thank you for hosting. I have learned so much from you. Tablescaping is addicting and is challenging for me expecially now because I am running out of room for more dishes, etc.

I love how you showed certain dishes in so many different settings. I love those pointed edge white plates that you use as a base.

My favorite is the red, white and blue table setting.
